On Saturday, April 5, we’re looking forward to seeing you at Ocean Space for a special guided tour of the exhibitions “otras montañas, las que andan sueltas bajo el agua” [other mountains, adrift beneath the waves] and “Echos of the Sanctuary” in the company of the respective curators Yina Jiménez Suriel and Louise Carver.
Yina Jiménez Suriel will accompany us through the new commissions by Nadia Huggins and Tessa Mars, presenting the main themes and practices of the two Caribbean artists. The exhibition “otras montañas, las que andan sueltas bajo el agua” explores improvisation~freestyle as an aesthetic strategy to transcend terrestrial and extractivist perspectives, expand the possibilities of creating life-sustaining systems, and confront entrenched notions of power, putting forward a new vision of the Ocean. The exhibition project is the culmination of the three-year cycle of TBA21–Academy’s program “The Current IV,” led by Jiménez Suriel herself, and also featuring both Huggins and Mars.
With Louise Carver we will explore the ten-year collaboration between TBA21–Academy and the Jamaican Alligator Head Foundation, delving into coral restoration practices and the concept of convivial conservation. “Echoes of the Sanctuary” combines scientific, artistic, cultural, and community perspectives, presenting new research relating to marine conservation and deep-sea mining.
Guided tours will be held in English. Our team of mediators will also be present in the space to answer questions in Italian.
