On Saturday, October 26, Ocean Space hosts the performance “GAIA-24. Opera del Mondo” by Opera Aperta, composed by Roman Grygoriv and Illia Razumeiko.

The performance concludes the public program of the Ukrainian pavilion, which focuses on Earth and Water as powerful symbols representing urgent global issues, including wartime experiences, ecological disasters, water and air pollution, migration, displacement, and disparities in food security and aims to explore the profound impact of these challenges on cultures worldwide and seek solutions for a sustainable future.

The Ukrainian pavilion’s public programme is organised by the Ukrainian Institute in partnership with the Ukrainian pavilion at the 60th International Art Exhibition La Biennale di Venezia, Goethe-Institut Ukraine, ERSTE Foundation, TBA21–Academy's Ocean Space, OPERA APERTA – laboratory for contemporary opera, proto produkciia agency and supported by Museums for Ukraine initiative.

Gaia - 24. Opera del mondo, performance by Opera Aperta

The opera GAIA-24 is dedicated to the devastating consequences of the Russian explosion of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station on 6 June 2023.

The work invokes Gaia, the ancient Greek goddess of the Earth, and also to the hypothesis of the same name, proposed by scientists in the 1980s, according to which the Earth, as a planet, is a living self-regulating organism.

The opera blends the transforming landscape, the human body, and the theatre stage into an open musical and theatrical process-ritual. The performance has three acts.

Conversations on Earth and Water

A discussion on the cultural ramifications and global challenges associated with water, and discuss how artists can combine issues that connect water, memory and artistic practices.
