This year's World Ocean Day carries a new, multi-year theme, Catalyzing Action for our Ocean and Climate, advocating not only for a "healthy blue planet but also a more just, equitable, and sustainable society."

Showing an understanding of the inextricability of social and environmental issues, this approach highlights the importance of advocacy to catalyze collective and intersectional action, including a just transition to clean and renewable energy, an end to fossil fuel extraction, the inclusion of local communities, restoring natural habitats, and collaborating in transformative ways.

On Saturday, June 8, join us at Ocean Space to celebrate our biggest ally in the fight against the effects of the climate crisis and support regenerative action that will help it thrive–along with all planetary life.

Ocean Space program is part of a wider program by TBA21 that celebrates the Ocean and brings Ocean Imagination and Ocean Action to cities around the world, including Costa Rica, Lisbon, Venice, Oeiras, and more.

First public kick-off of the Venice pilot of Bauhaus of the Seas Sails with Ca' Foscari University professors Fabio Pittarello, Fabio Pranovi and Massimo Warglien, Port of Venice Strategic Planning Area Manager Alessandra Libardo, IUAV University professor Francesco Musco, and Venice City Councilor Paola Mar.

Alongside the presentation in Venice, Bauhaus of the Seas Sails is organizing events on the occasion of World Ocean Day in Malmö, Rotterdam, Lisbon, and Oeiras. See more about the program here.

6 - 7pm | fishing without fish, culinary installation by Barena Bianca as part of the program Convivial Tables. A Diet for Resistance *Held in Italian.

A large narrative table to slow down our approach to food and reflect on the consequences that our food choices have on environmental, social, political, and economic levels.

During the performance the audience will be part of a type of fishing that represents neither sport nor survival, but is instead aware of the choices and the possible consequences on our daily diet - for both individuals and communities.

An evening of deep conversation and artistic exploration as we delve into the work of renowned artists Laure Winants and Robertina Šebjanič. Hosted by moderator Dalil Benhis-Folliot (Tara Ocean Foundation), this event will dive deep into the intricate relationships between more-than-humans and aquatic environments through the lens of situated artistic practices.

Bauhaus of the Seas Sails is one of the six lighthouse projects selected by the European Commission, in the context of the New European Bauhaus initiative, to demonstrate solutions for facing challenges related to sustainability, social inclusion, and beauty. These challenges are interpreted by the Bauhaus of the Seas Sails, proposing a mobilization around the most definitive global natural space and the most critical shared space in the EU and the world: seas, ocean, and water bodies.

Barena Bianca is a lagoon artivism collective active since 2018. Its starting point is the idea that protecting an ecosystem and caring for the people who inhabit it are two aspects impossible to separate. The name Barena Bianca and the choice to work on wetlands as fundamental ecosystem elements and at the same time existential metaphors stem from the awareness that lagoon erosion and erosion of the city fabric are due to causes closely interconnected.

Robertina Šebjanič is an artist and researcher who explores the watery realms of biological, (geo)political, and cultural realities. In her analysis of the Anthropocene and its theoretical framework, the artist uses the term "aquatocene" to refer to the human impact on aquatic environments. Her work is exhibited internationally and was awarded at Prix Ars Electronica, Starts Prize, Falling Walls, Re:Humanism a.o.

Laure Winants is a researcher and field-based visual artist (BE, FR). Her current research is highlighting the interdependence of ecosystems and encounters in more-than-human temporalities. Immersed in the polar regions, she uses techniques developed specifically to capture the optical and luminous phenomena unique to the region. Laure has exhibited her work internationally and has entered the collection of several foundations, such as the Fondation des Arts du Luxembourg and the Palais de Liège (BE).
