The meeting, the first of a series of training workshops, is addressed at teachers of all levels.

Ocean Literacy is a theme that emerged about twenty years ago in the U.S.A. to raise awareness in the education system on the importance of studying the ocean and water-related sciences. Through greater awareness, it aims to expand knowledge of the characteristics and problems facing the sea.

UNESCO, through its Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission, supports Ocean Literacy as a tool to strengthen recognition of the ocean's importance to the planet and to carry out affirmative action.

This meeting will be an in-depth presentation of the seven principles of Ocean Literacy and includes activities on issues facing the ocean, tested in 35 countries around the world.

The event is organised by Ocean Space in cooperation with Regional Bureau UNESCO for Science and Culture in Europe.
